Enabling the Good Life for the Student 

The new secretary general for the Student Union of the University of Oulu Eetu Leinonen seeks to fix the problems that he himself has seen and experienced as a student and as a youngster.

When Eetu Leinonen was asked about who he is he answered that for a short while he’s still a student. The 26-year-old Leinonen has a master’s degree in philosophy and studies the Finnish language. He has also been serving as the secretary general for the Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) from the end of March after the previous secretary general Kauko Keskisärkkä moved on to other duties. Leinonen was chosen unanimously in a student council meeting on the 13th of February.

The job description is not really that simple. The general secretary of the Student Union of the University of Oulu is responsible for the work at the office, the workers and making sure that the financial and administrative duties are going well. In addition the job includes promotion of interests, stakeholder co-operation and corporate governance with the chairman of the administration. 

Leinonen also has to do a bunch of representative work. His past as an active youngster politician is part of the reason why it is him who is the general secretary of OYY. He has a long career of organization work and chairmanships. For example he was the chairman of OYY back in 2020.

Leinonen’s story goes all the way back to his high school years and the youth council of Utajärvi which according to him made him interested in youth politics. Ever since then Leinonen has been involved in youth and student politics. This continues to this day. Leinonen is interested in internationality and represents the youth in international arenas as an EU delegate for the Finnish youth. 

Leinonen returns for a fourth term in OYY duties. After the chairmanship he has served as the specialist of academic affairs’ substitute as well as the community specialist. In between these positions there has been a break during which Leinonen worked for multiple employers the latest example being the mobility services for the University of Oulu. 

The personal motivation for working for a better life for the students made Leinonen come back to OYY. “As a youngster and a student I have a desire to fix the problems I have seen or experienced.”

Leinonen’s motives are not totally altruistic. The experienced, hard boiled student activist and a youth politician sees the position of the general secretary as an opportunity to improve himself with something that would otherwise take a long time. 

“You rarely get an opportunity like this at 26 years old. Being the foreperson of a group of eight people and an organization like this and planning the financial aspects of it.”

Plenty of experience from the University of Oulu and the academic community help a lot in succeeding at the task at hand. “My past as a student activist, lobbying experience and all the different tasks in OYY as well as the university as a whole give a wide image of what the university and its community are like. Youth politics have helped out in knowing how to bring the voice of the youth on to the surface and how to lobby.”

A Good Life for the Student

Leinonen observes the activity of OYY from the inside. He sees the student union as an influential part of the university. OYY is a respected and well appreciated organization. 

Despite this Leinonen admits that the regular student might be alienated from the organization. The student union is not on the same level as student organizations which are often very close to students’ hearts. “Organizations run by the students do incredibly valuable work for the student community.”

The point of OYY is not to replace the student organizations. It is a promoter of interests and a service organization. 

“The student union is an instrument. The students are what makes the university an university and the student union a student union. However, an organization of 12 500 members is most difficult to have an influence on every single student’s life”, Leinonen explains. He admits that OYY’s achievements could be more visible to students. 

The general secretary promotes the interests of the students with support and working as an enabler. “The student union is an organization that helps many people grow. It is where you come to learn and get opportunities to try things out.”

Leinonen’s job is to support the administration and the representative council so that they succeed in what they do. On the other hand he enables the work to be done with the creation of proper networks. Previous experience with the youth councils help out in this too. “Lobbying and influencing aren’t easy nor fast or done alone in a single night so I’m sure that I will have a role in that too.”

To Leinonen the motto of OYY “A good life for students” is about finding your own place in the academic world. This view is shaped by his past as the community expert. 

“When someone comes to study here they should find their own place in this community be it as an activist, in the administration, or just in a simple friend group. Also that everyone should find their own path, what they want to do in the future.” 

The new general secretary reminds us that support during studies is important. “To avoid burnouts and that the workload isn’t too heavy so they can be completed so the next step in life can be taken.”

According to Leinonen, OYY’s promotion of interests supports the communication between student organizations and the university’s governance. “So that the students gain support services that help them out in their studies and that people can meet each other here at the campus and find each other.”

The life of the student needs livelihood and hope for the future

A good life for the students doesn’t just mean that everything is great inside the campus walls. Leinonen is concerned about the financial situation and the employment opportunities of the students. “Many haven’t gotten jobs from the types of careers that usually have a great deal of them.” 

According to him, the life of the student needs more hope for the future. That the students’ own place in the world can be found after graduation and that during them they don’t drive themselves into massive financial debts. 

“Studying has never been an easy part of life where you can just do as you please. Nowadays gaining livelihood is harder and student debt just adds more pressure about graduating faster.” 

He adds that when the studies are planned by the university they do not take into consideration that the student often needs to work during them. Both of these factors at the same time can drive the student weary. “This is unsustainable.”

Taking a look into the future reveals that the population is getting older and that the amount of students is decreasing. Leinonen is worried about the diminishing vitality of Oulu and its employment opportunities. “Could we be in a situation where this city no longer is of interest to anyone?”

When asked about the future of the University of Oulu the brand new secretary general points out the importance of internationality and examining space issues. He hopes that during the decision making process it is taken into consideration that the solutions do not affect the quality of the education or strain the employees. 

The diminishing population groups especially hit hard on students and the funding that the higher educational institutions get from the government. Solutions for these problems have been sought from internationalization. Leinonen would like to see the opportunities for continuous and lifelong learning also remembered here. “Working-age people have needs for updating their knowledge, and it doesn’t always have to be studies leading to a degree, which are used to update their skills.”

Also the university’s new real estate strategy work investigates what kind of space is needed in the future. “With the solutions there can be taken actions towards a campus that is truly needed in the future.”

As the general secretary Leinonen wants to be a human-like actor.

“Someone who people aren’t afraid of to come and talk or give feedback to. I want to make it clear that I want to be with the people.”

In addition he wants to advance his own skills. “I think leading is a thing that there is not a singular way to learn it. It comes with experience.”

In the University of Oulu many student organizations publish their own magazines. The content in these magazines is usually very carefree and funny. A shining example of this is Terminaali. Amidst the silly magazines, alone stands the artistic Kultisti. Why are magazines the way they are?

Once upon a time, not so long ago at my student organization’s guild room my eye was struck by an odd magazine on the coffee table. The student organization for computer science and engineering OTiT’s magazine Terminaali. On the cover there boasts a teekkari with two OTiT-branded lightsabers and a marking “One of the magazines of all time!”. It intrigued me and I picked the issue up.

The content did not disappoint. The amateurish layout, whole bunch of memes, and low-to-no-class-tier articles filled the pages. Definitely one of the magazines of all time.

At the same time I glanced at cultural researchers’ magazine Kultisti and pondered on how its articles are prim and proper not resembling Terminaali or any other student organization’s magazine at all.

The spectrum of student organization magazines is clearly a wide one. It made me ask the question: why aren’t all of them as silly as Terminaali or as serious as Kultisti?

A magazine just for the students

Typical for the student culture in Finland is the publication of an own magazine for the student organization. Despite this almost none of them include relevant information for the organization or announce their official statements. The content is often very frivolous and nonserious. The articles are just like their students. Topics are anything from reviews, reports on student events or parties, and from short stories to humoristic strings of text. The magazines are written either by the editorial staff or with just the editor-in-chief with the help of the regular students. 

Student organization magazines have always and will always look like the students that write them. The editor-in-chief is chosen by a vote for a term of one year by the students. This means that the content of the magazine won’t get stale and will evolve with new students. 

Proper or raunchy?

Magazines made by teekkaris often are the most unserious of them all. OTiT’s Terminaali is a by-the-book example of this. The bar for what is released scrapes the floor and the graphic design can be pretty much anything. Dirty jokes and memes fill the pages. 

However, this is not a bad thing.

In the ocean of similar magazines the silliness of Terminaali is a breath of fresh air. Since all of the other magazines are alike, a magazine that tries to be as ridiculous as possible is a great thing. 

If Terminaali does not take anything seriously, Kultisti is its opposite. The magazine produced by the student organization for archeology, literature and cultural anthropology Kultu ry from front to back is appropriate. Most of the content in it is seriousminded and artistic. This is not a coincidence. Ever since the magazine started appearing it was meant to be different from the other less serious magazines. 

Furthermore, since Kultu ry is the student organization for students of literature producing convincing texts come naturally to them adding to the professional atmosphere of the magazine.

A voice of the students: An interview with the editor-in-chief of Terminaali

What is the nature of Terminaali and Kultisti and what do the editors-in-chief think about the content in their respective magazines?

The editor-in-chief for Terminaali  is the first year student of computer science Julius Kuruheimo. In OTiT he was elected as the “information minister” whose job among other things is to edit Terminaali

Terminaali did before, approximately before the year 2020, in fact resemble a regular student organization magazine. This doesn’t mean that the magazine was always prim and proper. An example of the built-in raunchy humor of the magazine is the fact that a lightly clothed or a naked woman can be found in every issue of the magazine since 1998. Nowadays the content has been going towards a previously less serious direction. 

Terminaali 1/2025

According to Kuruheimo what affects the content of the magazine the most are the students and what they choose to write about which is why he doesn’t see a simple reason for the change. The main point of Terminaali is to bring forth the voice of the students of the organization so it should also look like the students themselves. 

The content of the magazine sprouts from the students but the editorial staff is not totally powerless in deciding on what is released. Not everything can be published even though at first it might seem like it. Offensive articles or personal attacks will not be tolerated by Kuruheimo. “The magazine is meant to make people laugh, not offend.”

Kuruheimo reveals that the editorial staff has been considering making the magazine more serious. “Already there are “half-serious” articles in there but all in all the magazine looks like its editors”, Kuruheimo said. He also brings forth the possibility of creating a new fully serious magazine with articles that possibly could not be found in Terminaali

Relating to if Kuruheimo would like to continue in the field of journalism he said that it is a possibility. Even if this career path is not for certain he confessed that he likes to write.

Bringing together the creative folks: An interview with the editors-in-chief of Kultisti

Next up we have the editors-in-chief for Kultisti: Anni Koivisto and Aino Uusitalo. Both of them are literature students. Koivisto is a first year student and Uusitalo is a second year student. 

Both Koivisto and Uusitalo thought up the idea for being the editor-in-chief independently from each other. Uusitalo enjoys writing and organizing things which is why the position of the editor-in-chief was of interest. As well as enjoying writing Koivisto also is keen on graphic design. She has designed the layouts for all of the Kultisti issues she has made so far. 

Uusitalo states that the editor-in-chief is more of an organizer than a writer. She and Koivisto do not write anything in the issues apart from the editorial. Other than that the magazine consists of other people’s texts. 

Multiple editors-in-chief positions aren’t new for Kultisti. During Kultu ry’s former government’s reign there were also two of them but before that there has traditionally only been a singular editor-in-chief as Koivisto puts it. Uusitalo praises the arrangement since the workload is well distributed with two persons working on the same magazine. 

Kultisti is a magazine that is made with group work”, Uusitalo exclaims. She says that a designated group makes the magazines but anyone can submit an article to be published.  

Special qualities of Kultisti are the sections that consistently appear in every issue. Other student organization magazines barely have these but Kultisti has multiple. For example comic series by the nickname “Jemma” called Naali Lipastossa has a new story in every issue. The comic features an arctic fox and other fluffy animal friends in relatable situations at Oulu university. Another consistently appearing section is the Friend Book in which students interview lecturers and professors about their favorite things. 

Kultisti 2/2023

The magazine has always strived to stand out from the rest. The magazine has been described by the former editors-in-chief in a letter to the new ones as “a more psychedelic and an artistic one” when compared to the others. At the same time they admit that the magazine is on a course to become more like the others. 

Uusitalo is intrigued by the “psychedelicness”. She thinks that the magazine clearly stands out. Both of the editors-in-chief believe that they own an artistic vision with each magazine. Humor has not been forgotten however. For example, a couple of issues ago released Kultuskooppi horoscope series was made with a loose attitude. According to Koivisto it would be wonderful if the magazine had more jokes in it. “Everything doesn’t have to be serious.”

Kultisti has made great use of social media as a marketing tool and making especially the literature students aware of the magazine’s existence. “We know that literature students like to write for themselves. We are trying to make Kultisti into a zero pressure environment so they would get the courage to release their texts in the magazine or at least on our social media”, Uusitalo says. 

Koivisto thinks it would be amazing if the feeling of a regular student organization magazine would be preserved in Kultisti. The issue that’s aimed at the first year students released next autumn is promised to be funny in a way that is very inline with the magazine. 

When asked about what the point of the magazine is, Uusitalo confidently exclaimed: “This magazine brings together creative folk”.

Koivisto would like to work in the field of journalism in the future. Especially writing columns and articles would be to her taste. Uusitalo is not so sure but has gone through the communication studies. 

The editors-in-chief know also that there is more to life than work. “We celebrate new issues by going for a drink!”

Not so different after all? 

The differences between Terminaali and Kultisti are obvious. The magazines not only are different in content but also the editorial staff has some ideological differences so to say. Kultisti drives to make itself less serious when at the same time trying to keep a grip on its own image meanwhile Terminaali tries to be more serious but still being a silly teekkari magazine. 

Both magazines are unique in their own way. They are very different from other student organization magazines since they do things that the others won’t. The other magazines contain humorous articles and on occasion more serious content. For example the history students’ Praavda magazine is not as artistic and serious as Kultisti.

The other magazines do not really have anything that makes them different. This is not a bad thing since the magazines are still unique in their own way, just less so than Kultisti or Terminaali.  

A change in the editorial staff’s attitude towards a more unique magazine would not be a disadvantage. Experimentation in creative work is great, even encouraged since creative work without new ideas is not simply creative. Without innovation or experimentation, creativity withers away and the same old ideas are repeated over and over. 

The change doesn’t have to be eternal. If something new doesn’t work it can be replaced with the old. These sorts of situations aren’t a hindrance. They are a learning experience. 

The content of the magazines is at the end of the day in the hands of the students. If they do not want the change, it will never happen. And that is great. The magazines exist for the students by the students.

Pitkäaikaisen unelman täyttymys

Oulun yliopistossa luokanopettajaksi opiskeleva Meri Jurvansuu oli 12-vuotias, kun hänen ystävänsä sisko oli palannut Australiasta ja kertoi kokemuksistaan upeasta ilmastosta, työskentelystä farmilla ja yleisesti vuodestaan maassa. Seitsemännellä luokalla nuori ilmoitti, että hän menee yliopistoon ja lähtee vaihtoon Australiaan. 

Helmikuussa 2023 tuo unelma toteutui, kun Jurvansuu laskeutui Melbourneen ja aloitti puolen vuoden vaihtojakson Melbournen yliopistossa. “Kaukovaihtoihin pitää hakea todella aikaisin, joten tiesin lähdöstä jo vuotta ennen itse vaihdon alkamista”, Jurvansuu kertoo. Kaukokohteisiin hakuprosessi on muutenkin erilainen kuin esimerkiksi Erasmus-vaihtoon. Valintakriteereinä käytetään akateemisia perusteluita vaihtoon hakeutumiselle, motivaatiota, opintomenestystä ja kielitaitoa. SoleMove-hakemuksen lisäksi valintaprosessiin kuuluu ryhmähaastattelu. “Hakuprosessi oli aika raskas, mutta se todellakin kannatti”, Jurvansuu palaa muistelemaan epävarmaa hakuaikaa. 

Jurvansuu palasi Australiasta heinäkuussa ja aloittaa nyt viimeisen vuoden opintojaan Oulun yliopistossa. Vajaan puolen vuoden vaihtojakso hidasti opintoja hieman, sillä hän ei pystynyt suorittamaan toista sivuainetta loppuun viime keväänä Australiasta. “Nyt minulla on vain hieman kirittävää tänä vuonna. Kyllä tässä joutuu töitä tekemään.” Valmistuminen ajallaan on kuitenkin edelleen mahdollista. “Ei minulla toisaalta ole myöskään kiire valmistua, jos työmäärä tuntuu liian suurelta”, hän lisää. 

Vaihto-opiskelu on eittämättä rikastava ja arvokas kokemus ihan vain jo kansainvälistymisen näkökulmasta. Jurvansuun mielestä kuitenkaan ainakaan hänen tutkinto-ohjelmassaan mahdollisuudesta ei kerrota tarpeeksi. Ystäviensä kanssa keskustellessa hän on huomannut, että tutkinto-ohjelmien välillä on huomattavasti eroja, kuinka paljon vaihtoon lähtemiseen kannustetaan. Hän toivoisi, että vaihto-opiskelun mahdollisuutta painotettaisiin enemmän heti opintojen alusta. 

Kulttuurikokemuksia

Vaikka Jurvansuu ei kokenut suurta kulttuurishokkia muuttaessaan yli 15 000 kilometrin päähän, oli esimerkiksi opiskelijan arki hyvin erilaista Melbournessa. “Opiskelu oli hyvin itsenäistä, kävin yliopistolla vain kahtena päivänä viikossa ja muut päivät tein itsekseni tehtäviä.” Myös opiskelijakulttuuri oli erilainen, esimerkiksi haalareita ei opiskelijoilla näe Australiassa. Yleensä opiskelijayhteisön tapahtumat olivat päiväsaikaan tapahtuvia, kuten piknikkejä tai kampuksella olevia tapahtumia, ja alkoholittomia. 

Melbournea pidetään Australian kulttuurin ja taiteen keskuksena, eikä turhaan.  “Melbournessa tapahtuu aina jotain. Usein lähdin vain kävelemään päämäärättömästi ja aina tuli jotain tapahtumia, kuten katutaidetta tai konsertteja eteen. Kaupungissa on myös paljon ilmaisia museoita.” Ilmaiset elämykset olivat opiskelijalle iso plussa, koska kaupunki on muuten melko kallis ja erityisesti asuminen on kallista Melbournessa. “Säästöjä kannattaa olla, jos lähtee Australiaan.”

Vaihto-opiskelussa toiseen kulttuuriin soluttautuessa altistuu vääjäämättä itselle uusille asioille, ja ainakin Jurvansuun oman kokemuksen mukaan se laajentaa maailmankatsomusta ja tietämystä kulttuureista. “Meille muodostui tiivis vaihtareista koostunut porukka, jossa hoksasimme, että meillä kaikilla oli eri uskonto. Opin enemmän uskonnoista tuona aikana kuin ikinä koulussa”, hän kertoo esimerkkinä. 

Oppeja ja itsevarmuutta

Vaihto-opintoihin asti sosiaalinen ja muiden seurasta nauttiva Jurvansuu oli vältellyt yksinoloa. Vaihdossa hänen täytyi opetella olemaan myös yksin. “En ole koskaan ollut noin paljon itsekseni kuin Melbournessa. Opin nauttimaan omasta seurastani ja yksin asioiden tekemisestä.” Hän kuitenkin kertoo, että tunsi olonsa välillä yksinäiseksi ja jos nyt saisi päättää, hän olisi valinnut ajalle kimppakämpän. “Ajattelin silloin, että minulla olisi epämukava olo asua tuntemattomien kanssa. Olisi kuitenkin ollut kiva, jos olisi ollut aina joku, jolle jutella.” Vaihtoaika opettikin arvostamaan läheisiä entistä enemmän. Hän lähes herkistyy puhuessaan, kuinka perheen ja ystävien merkitys korostui ja erossa vietetty aika sai tajuamaan, kuinka rakkaita ihmisiä hänellä on ympärillään. 

Alkuun Jurvansuu myös koki, että omaa persoonaa oli vaikea tuoda esille englanniksi. Puhelias ja sarkastiseen huumoriin tottunut huomasi, että vaikka hän puhui hyvin englantia, hän ei pystynyt reagoimaan keskusteluissa yhtä nopeasti ja nokkelasti kuin omalla äidinkielellään. “Aluksi ajattelin, että nyt kaikki luulevat, että olen ihan tylsä. Englanti kuitenkin parani todella paljon ja nopeasti, ja tämäkin helpottui vaihdon myötä”, Jurvansuu muistelee. 

Vaikka tuleva luokanopettaja ei lähtenyt vaihtoon niinkään akateemisen puolen vuoksi, merkittävimpiä asioita, joita hän otti vaihtovuodesta mukaansa, olivat akateemisten taitojen kehittyminen ja opintoihin panostaminen. Jurvansuu kertoo, että Australian korkeaan tasoon pyrkivä opiskelukulttuuri vaikutti häneen positiivisesti ja kannusti panostamaan kurssisuorituksiin. “Opin kirjoittamaan todella hyviä esseitä”, hän yksilöi. 

Vaihtoaika vahvisti Jurvansuun tahtoa hakeutua valmistumisen jälkeen vapaaehtoistöihin. Hän kokee, että uuteen hyppääminen ja toiselle puolelle muuttaminen toi rohkeutta ja varmuutta omasta identiteetistä. “Tuli varmuutta, että kyllä mä pärjään ja pystyn. Nyt kynnys lähteä uuteen ja tuntemattomaan on matalampi.” 

Jurvansuu kannustaa kaikkia lähtemään vaihtoon. “Se on niin rikastuttava kokemus tulevaisuuden, kielitaidon ja itsevarmuuden kannalta.” Hän myös muistuttaa, kuinka ainutlaatuinen mahdollisuus se on kokea uutta. “Ei samankaltaista mahdollisuutta välttämättä ikinä myöhemmin elämässä tule, se kannattaa todellakin hyödyntää.”


All about education

When Jian Lee, 32, decided to spend a year in France she had only one goal – getting a degree. Jian had come to Finland to get her Master’s in Marketing just under a year ago when she moved again to study the second part of her degree in Bourdeaux, France. The arrangement was included in her Master’s studies as a double degree program student. 

Double degree programs are available in Oulu Business School for a limited amount of students. In the program a student receives a Master’s degree from two universities having studied in both for one year. 

Lee knew the year in France would not be about getting experiences, travelling or other traditionally associated activities during one’s exchange year but full-on studying. “I wrote my thesis remotely and went to courses in France, it was quite hectic”, Lee explains. She would be completing her degree in Oulu Business School simultaneously with another tuition in France.

But she didn’t mind. Finland was already the international experience she had longed for. This was about education. 

Lee felt that the more European degrees she can get the better for employment. Now graduated Master of Science plans to stay in Finland and going to France was a milestone for achieving this goal. 

“I felt that having various degrees in European countries it might be easier to get a job. Some people may feel like they want to get the foreign experience but in my case it was different because I was already a foreigner in Finland. I needed a degree, a diploma.” 

Even though Lee went to Bordeaux with one sole purpose in mind, in time she realized there was more to take away from the journey. “I was really busy and swamped, but I tried to find small windows of periods of time to go out in the city. I enjoyed the small stuff.” She mentions the good food and wineries of Bordeaux. 

Set a purpose for why you are going there. It will help you keep yourself uplifted in times of doubt.

It’s not all sunshine and roses

Being in a melting pot of people with different backgrounds made Lee aware of the diversity issues she was confronted with on a daily basis. “Diversity was just a textbook concept for me, but after experiencing the negative and positive things I learned how to deal with and manage issues with diversity”, she explains.

Having to meet new people from all over the world was also the greatest gift. “I made many international friends.The study program offers a lot of opportunities to be mixed with people from different backgrounds from all over the world.”

She also feels that being around people from different cultures expands one’s perspective. “The more I experience different cultures the more I can think about the person instead of the culture”, Lee says. During that year she learned to focus on the people she meets instead of the culture they represent. Once she opened her mind it helped her to grow as a global citizen of the world. This lesson has stayed with her after returning to Finland. “I proved many stereotypes to be wrong.”

For anyone thinking about going to exchange or preparing to leave, Lee has two pieces of advice. “First, set a purpose for why you are going there. It will help you keep yourself uplifted in times of doubt. Second, be open. Don’t have too many stereotypes. Learning about the culture beforehand is wise, but too much prevents you from having smooth experiences.”

Student Union of University of Oulu (OYY)  selected Viljami Viinikka as their new community specialist. During his two-year long post Viinikka hopes to be a specialist for the entire university community.

Viljami Viinikka, 25, started as OYY’s community specialist in the beginning of 2023. However, Viinikka is not a tenderfoot at the OYY office. He acted as vice president in OYY’s board during 2022 and was in charge of the community sector. “Work environment and assignments were quite familiar already, which aided in orientation”, Viinikka mentions. “Last year as the previous community specialist Eetu Leinonen’s journeyman he accustomed me to many tasks, but still the transition gets confusing from time to time”, he adds.

Fresh specialist instantly got off the deep end of work when he was assigned two major events both taking place in the first month of his employment. 

The Student Union educates its societies’ active members in Active Clubs February 1st and 2nd. Since the community specialist acts as a link between OYY and societies, organizing the Active Clubs is his responsibility. 

The second event, Löyly, targets the other significant stakeholder group on community specialist’s job description – international students. Löyly is a working life event held 25th and 26th of January aimed primarily towards international degree students, but open for everyone. The aim of the event is to offer practical guidance and tips in seeking a job in the Oulu area, and to provide information about Finnish working life. Another aim is to bring together employers in Oulu and international degree students. The event is fully in English. The program consists of keynote-speeches, workshops, panel discussions and cv-photography. OYY organizes Löyly in collaboration with OSAKO.

Viinikka ended up as community specialist after a deliberation of his own strengths. “Reasons for applying were quite the same as why I ended up applying to study chemistry back in the day: I considered how I could help people and what were my personal strengths. Naturally, societies and advocacy work are close to my heart as well.”

Societies really are familiar to Viinikka. Since moving to Oulu from Lumijoki to study chemistry in the summer of 2017, Viinikka has been a familiar sight not only in his subject organizations’ board presidiums but also in recreational associations’ boards. “Recretional associations luckily have a good footing in Oulu University, you can really witness the communality spirit here.”

Easy to approach yet easily approaching

Viinikka portrays himself as a project-person who enjoys learning new skills. “Continuous development is fun and so are new skills”. When he’s not playing karelian gorodki (kyykkä), he might be doing crafts or exploring new recipes in the kitchen. He tells a story about a time he made appleless apple pie. Reportedly people eating it had a really hard time believing it really didn’t contain any apples, so much it tasted like a real apple pie. “Baking links up with my interest in chemistry”, he says. 

Viinikka also plays the accordion, and sometimes visits to play for albums for various projects. “Recently, I was even asked to go sing for one!”, he laughs. 

Community specialist meets various, colorful people in his line of duty. Viinikka hopes to be the whole university community’s community specialist. For student organizations, a community specialist is a pillar, someone to ask guidance from and seek positive reinforcement. “I’m here to tell that very few things are the end of the world”. 

Community specialist’s job description is divided roughly into two sectors: societies and international affairs. Social work demands for an easy to approach -kind of person, and exactly that Viinikka hopes for himself to be. Not only wishes he to be easy to approach, but has already instigated an ‘easily approaching’ -method for conducting business. “During my brief career I’ve already managed to personally walk straight to a guild room to solve one organization’s problem. I don’t know if previous society specialists have been so forward in their actions”, he laughs. 

As one of the biggest challenges in the University community, Viinikka mentions the divide between international and other students. “The integration of international students to the rest of the student community is an on-going challenge that we must work on”. Especially Covid-19 put a set back to this work, according to Viinikka, and now extra attention must be paid to it. 

As greetings Viinikka urges students to go to exchange. “It is a fine opportunity that vexatiously few students exploit”.

Pursuing a higher degree in Finland is indeed an attractive and promising prospect for foreign talent. Why wouldn’t it be? The Finnish education system isn’t one of the best for nothing. This plays a major factor leading many students to also consider a career in their respective fields in Finland.

Speaking of personal experience, as I have studied both in my home country and in Finland, the difference is quite noticeable. In many countries, the students are forced to memorize a massive amount of information, and then take exams based on their ability to recall that information. They could get good grades, but if you ask whether they learned anything, it probably wouldn’t be much.

That’s not the case in Finland. During my studies here, I’ve never felt any kind of pressure from teachers. They have always been supportive and flexible. They’ve also made sure to design the assignments in a way that the student would actually learn from them, rather than rotely memorizing.

The exams were never a verbatim copy of what the teachers taught in the classroom. I think their purpose was to ensure that the students were paying attention. Even if you failed, you would get a second and third chance to make it right, which kind of takes a load off the students’ mind.

I think it is great that the system was designed to give second chances since you can never really know why a student performed badly in an exam. Another positive aspect is that second chances aren’t just in exams, but in the courses overall. During one of the courses I took, I remember being just a few points away from the next grade. To help with that, I negotiated with the teacher to do some additional work to get those points.

Some courses offered alternatives for passing them, like writing an assignment or taking an exam. In the case of a student not doing well in an assignment, they can choose to take the exams, and vice versa. Such alternatives can be found listed in the University of Oulu’s Policies for the Recognition of Learning, for example. So, to those of you who are studying in Finland at the moment, you’ve come to the right place.

However, if you’re seeking a career here after that, I would advise you to think again and do your research.

Many of the foreign students coming to Finland want to stay here and pursue a career. But how useful is it to bring foreign talent here? Foreign employment has been promoted widely through frequent career fairs and workshops, but nonetheless, a lot of the talent goes to waste.

I know many people, myself included, who graduated here, but are unable to secure employment with their Finnish degrees for one reason or another. The most common example of such reasons is the “insufficient language skills”. As a person who speaks Finnish well enough, I don’t think that’s a good reason.

In many cases, we are rejected for no apparent reason, or are simply “ghosted” by the employers. We never get invited to interviews, and we always get the standard rejection message “Thank you for your application. We have received many great applications, but you were not selected this time”. Because of that, we lost the motivation to seek meaningful careers, and by that I mean careers corresponding to our education and acquired skills through that.

We had to settle for menial jobs like cleaning, paper delivery, and food delivery, just to live day by day and meet our financial obligations. I honestly see no sustainability here in terms of ensuring that these foreign job seekers get to contribute to the Finnish job market in their respective fields.

A master’s thesis written by Anthony-Claret Onwutalobi from Lahti University of Applied Sciences talked specifically about unemployed immigrant graduates from Finnish higher institutions. In his work, he indicated that 58% of the participants in his surveys said that they haven’t met their career expectations in Finland. Furthermore, the study showed that 56% disagree on the fact that the job market is welcoming for internationals, and 28% strongly disagree.

Onwutalobi also highlighted a very critical point, which was in regards to the factors that helped in securing employment in Finland. A very small percentage were able to land jobs through applying or through career services (7% and 11%, respectively), while a total of 77% got their jobs through networking or personal reference. Employers say they are open to foreign employment, but are they? If a foreign student can’t even land an internship with these employers, or simply an interview, how can they land a job?

A very important question needs to be asked; are international jobseekers not needed, or not wanted?

We unfortunately have heard of true stories regarding discrimination and injustice experienced by people with not just one, but two or three degrees and a proficiency in many languages, including Finnish. This leads many to believe that the latter is to be true: international job seekers are not wanted. Of course, there are some success stories by people who have made it, but that does not mean that the issue is nonexistent.

If highly educated foreigners involuntarily see a need to deliver food and newspapers, rather than working in their respective fields, then there is a major issue. Many individuals, Finnish people and foreigners alike, have highlighted this issue on a plethora of social media platforms, most notably on the employment-oriented LinkedIn. Hence, the issue’s existence is being acknowledged widely. However, has it been addressed sufficiently? Has there been extensive efforts to alleviate this issue?

We have yet to be proven wrong, but I sure hope we do.

The OYY Executive Board for 2022 came to order during a meeting on January 24. The new Board was chosen during a Council meeting on December 15, 2021. The eight-member Board consists of a colourful bunch of students from different fields with all of them aiming for a common goal for the term: a communal and visible OYY.

The term for the 2022 Board of the Student Union of the University of Oulu is coloured by various projects to re-shape the work of OYY – re-branding, renewing the Policy Document, and wellbeing and organisational projects. “Led by these projects, we’ll honour our mission to advocate for a good life for students.”

“The wellbeing project funding received from the Ministry of Education and Culture will allow us to concentrate resources on supporting wellbeing. In particular, the effects of the corona pandemic will most likely be perceptible for a long time, and we hope to do our part in reducing the negative impact with the help of the wellbeing project.

The re-branding mainly aims to enhance communication. The goal of the re-branding is a consistent visual interface that is clearer, more visible and recognisable. Additionally, the website will be improved in order to make the services more visible and to give students easier access to the information. The mandate to renew the Policy Document came from the Council of Representatives. The aim of the renewal is to update the big policies to better match today’s needs.

“We want the next Board to inherit a communal Student Union. Our goal is to further the mindset that you should be proud to be a student at University of Oulu, to help the students have a clear feeling of community, and to strengthen the identity of the student from Oulu.” The motto of OYY is “A good life for students.” This is also the guiding principle for all of the Board’s work; to continuously improve the education and wellbeing of the students.

Under the prevailing corona conditions, the work of the Board is also impacted through uncertain prospects for the future. “It’s quite difficult to predict the future. Concrete execution methods for the ongoing projects are still uncertain, as we don’t know what the situation will be, for example, a few months or half a year from now.” Particularly the development of organisational cooperation and the wellbeing project are still finding their shape regarding the execution.

Students advocating for students

The members of the Board want to emphasise that they’re sitting at this table for the sake of the students. “As clichéd as it sounds, we’re here for you. We think about the students and their benefit in all we do. We wish to efficiently cooperate with the students.” OYY has been criticised for being distant to the students. The Board wishes to change this. Previous Boards have had the same goal. “We must improve in emphasising the purpose of OYY and the significance of the Board as advocates for the students”, says Chairperson Lotta Leinonen.

Iikka Kokkoniemi adds that although many of the members have moved on from subject society work to a different organisation, he hopes that they will still be regarded as easy to approach. “I’m still the same person and a student, just like everyone else.” Reform of organisational cooperation is also hoped to improve the situation. “Closer cooperation helps bring the OYY Board closer to guilds and interest societies”, mentions Viljami Viinikka who works in the society sector.

The Board has already faced criticism after publishing a statement on January 27, 2022, aiming to appeal to decision-makers, calling for forward-looking decisions. In the statement, the OYY Board suggests that in the long run, new construction is the more sustainable and cost-efficient solution, in comparison to renovating the Linnanmaa campus. However, the statement has been interpreted as a sign of support for the city campus project, which has evoked lots of negative conversations amongst students that oppose the project.

The aim of the statement was to introduce a new perspective to accompany previous statements. “We wanted to emphasise the students’ need to study in a healthy and safe environment”, comments the Chairperson of the OYY Board Lotta Leinonen and the 2. Vice Chair Suvi-Anna Salminen. Leinonen acknowledges that bold advocacy work can put you in a vulnerable position. However, she emphasises that conversations should have room for open discussion and varying viewpoints, and everyone should be respected.

Why did you apply for Board membership?

When I was thinking about where to find new challenges and to utilise my previous experience from subject society level, OYY seemed interesting. I noticed that the matters dealt with there are relevant to my interests. It also gives me valuable experience in organisational Board work.

What do you wish to achieve in the Board?

To improve the visibility of OYY, to students and other interest groups, so that we can be a partner that’s seen and heard by everybody. I want to take advantage of the platforms given to me and continue OYY’s long-standing work.

I’ve been running around in different meetings and places of advocacy since I was little, so the work feels natural – this is sort of a natural continuation for an organisational career.

I’m interested in advocating for all students, and OYY gives me experience in that. I have previously worked in organisations that have only recently been formed, so OYY provides a good counterbalance to that. It also helps me gain good experience in working in a larger organisation.

It has always been my dream to be in a position of influence and leadership. It doesn’t really matter where as long as I get to influence and further change. The most important thing for me is to bring the students’ wellbeing to the centre, to advance the production of high quality services and opportunities to take care of the wellbeing of myself and the community through, both, local and national advocacy work. Personally, I want to grow as a person.
